FAlbum AJAX Lightbox

Published by gringod at 1:06 pm under GrinGod [dot] Com, Links, PHP, Programming, Site Work

Since I moved GrinGod [dot] com to UH Hosting I have no longer had Gallery installed on the server, instead I use Flickr for hosting my images.

To display the images in my website I decided to go with FAlbum, a plugin for Wordpress.  This morning I upgraded FAlbum to the latest version (0.6.4).  I also saw in Digg this morning a list of Downloadable AJAX Galleries, Slideshows and Effects.

One thing led to another and I ended up doing a mash-up of FAlbum and Lightbox JS.  Now, when you are viewing an image in my photos, you can click on one of the size links which (if you are using a modern browser) will display the selected image size in a nice Web 2.0 style lightbox.

If you want to use my mash-up I’ve made the modified files available on my download page.  Please note that I am not planning on supporting this mash-up and that I may well make changes to it in the future.  None of my changes have been or will be localised.

This is an awesome hack. Thanks for your hardwork, I have one question. How to I get it to behave as you do on your site instead of only using lightbox for the sized images?

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,

Glad you like the hack. This new hack works in pretty much the same way although I had to do yet more changes to the FAlbum base class.

I’ll release another set of changed files when I get into work on Monday if you want to use it.

I have a few suggestions:

    1. When you click a thumbnail and the lightbox shows up, I’d like to see a “View this is flickr” link on there that links to the flickr page for that image.

    2. If you have more than 1 page full of images, your only able to navigate the images in the current page using the Next and Previous button in the lightbox view.

    Hi jason,

    1. Funny you should mention that. It’s something I’ve been working on as part of the 0.6.6 upgrade.

    2. Not sure if this is possible because of the way Lightbox JS works, but I’ll have a look into it.

What does everyone think about making something like falbum that uses the lightbox 2.0 plugin. is that possible? i’m not a coder, just an idea man but i think that would be really cool.

But my latest versions of the mashup do use Lightbox 2.0… or are you talking about using the Lightbox in a different way?

Checkout my downloads page for the latest version.

I upgraded my FAlbum plugin. This post will serve as a searchable reminder for me of the things I need to do after I upgrade the FAlbum plugin in the future.

If it’s not a silly question, did you mean the actual UH Hosting run by James, or United Hosting run by Matt? Simply because the two companies are often confused, especially with United Hosting often using the UH abbreviation.

I meant the UH Hosting run by James. I’ve never heard of that United Hosting

There is a small loading time as the AJAX goodness goes on behind the scenes but the full editable page opens up.
